1. DURING THE PERIOD 31 AUGUST TO 2 SEPTEMBER 1984 TORRENTIAL RAINS, WITH FALLS UP TO 63 CM, HIT CENTRAL REGION, KYUNGGIDO AND KANGWONDO. OTHER PROVINCES REPORTED AFFECTED: CHUNGCHONGDO, KYONGSANGDO AND CHOLLADO.

2. FIRST REPORTS: 85 DEAD, 44 MISSING, 89 INJURED. 11,220 HOMES INUNDATED, 92,423 HOMELESS. EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO ROADS AND BRIDGES. ROADS WASHED AWAY IN 275 PLACES.

3. RICE HARVEST EXPECTED TO BE SEVERELY AFFECTED. 48,419 HECTARES FARMLAND FLOODED, 33,521 HECTARES CROPS DAMAGED. GOVERNMENT SOURCES ESTIMATE PROPERTY DAMAGE AT US DLRS 17.8 MILLION.

4. EXTENSIVE NATIONAL RESPONSE. ARMED SERVICES ON EMERGENCY DUTY AND KOREA RED CROSS DISTRIBUTING BLANKETS, FOOD, AND FIRST AID KITS TO VICTIMS HOUSED IN SCHOOLS, CHURCHES AND OTHER TEMPORARY ACCOMMODATION.

5. GOVERNMENT HAS NOT REQUESTED INTERNATIONAL RESPONSE.

1. RAINS HAVE ABATED AND HAN RIVER HAS RECEDED SUBSTANTIALLY. UNDRO/UNDP PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE REPORTS SITUATION THROUGHOUT KOREA NOW LESS SERIOUS AND RAPIDLY RETURNING TO NORMAL.

2. LATEST REPORTS: 139 DEAD, 40 MISSING, 30,000 HOMELESS, 100,000 TEMPORARILY EVACUATED FROM FLOODED HOMES. SEOUL SUFFERED SERIOUS WATER SUPPLY, SEWAGE, ELECTRICITY AND TELEPHONE PROBLEMS. EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO STREETS.

3. EMERGENCY BEING MET THROUGH EXTENSIVE MOBILIZATION OF NATIONAL RESOURCES. GOVERNMENT DECLARED STATE OF CIVIL DEFENSE EMERGENCY. SITUATION HAS BEEN CLOSELY MONITORED BY DISASTER CONTROL CENTER, MINISTRY OF CONSTRUCTION.

4. KOREAN RED CROSS RELIEF SUPPLIES VALUED US DLRS 500,000 INCLUDE BLANKETS, CLOTHING, UTENSILS AND FOOD. RED CROSS ASSISTED BY ALMOST 4,000 VOLUNTEERS AND SIX MEDICAL TEAMS. THROUGH AMBASSADOR'S DISASTER ASSISTANCE FUND, US GOVERNMENT HAS DONATED US DLRS 25,000 TO KOREAN RED CROSS.

5. GOVERNMENT HAS NOT REQUESTED INTERNATIONAL ASSISTANCE.

1. UNDRO/UNDP RESIDENT CO-ORDINATOR HAS TRANSMITTED FOLLOWING SUMMARY REPORT: DEAD 156, INJURED 187. PROPERTY DAMAGE: 131.8 MILLION WON (US DLRS 167,899).

2. GOVERNMENT OF JAPAN CONTRIBUTED CASH US DLRS 100,000. VOLUNTARY NATIONAL DONATIONS BETWEEN 2 AND 17 SEPTEMBER 1984 TOTALLED 15.9 MILLION WON (US DLRS 28,255). FUNDS USED TO REPAIR DAMAGED HOUSES AND DIRECTLY ASSIST AFFECTED PERSONS.

3. GOVERNMENT DOES NOT APPEAL FOR EXTERNAL ASSISTANCE.
