Qatar is a prominent actor on both the regional and global humanitarian stage. It has a population of some three million, including a significant expatriate community, and a thriving business and economic sector. Qatar’s humanitarian and development programmes have expanded significantly in the last decade, and so has its role as a peace mediator in the region and beyond.
Qatar remains a strong partner to UNHCR, both in terms of advocacy and support to our work worldwide.
Through significant contributions from government and private entities, Qatar has consistently ranked in the top 10 donors per capita to UNHCR globally since 2019 and has also been a member of UNHCR’s Top Donors Group through its multi-year core contributions and funding from Qatar Fund for Development.
Qatar has contributed to numerous UNHCR programmes globally in support of refugees and internally displaced people, with a focus on the Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria situations, as well as Yemen and the Rohingya emergency. Priority areas include cash assistance, winter support, education, health care, shelter, livelihoods and climate change.
