PORTUGAL - LISBON FIRE
UNDRO INFORMATION REPORT NO. 1
25 AUGUST 1988

1. A HUGE FIRE BROKE OUT 3-4 A.M. GMT TODAY IN LISBON'S HISTORIC 18TH CENT. CENTRE AND MAIN SHOPPING AREA. FIRE HAS DESTROYED SEVERAL BUILDINGS, CAUSED GREAT MATERIAL DAMAGE, AND IS BEING DESCRIBED AS WORST LISBON CATASTROPHE SINCE 1775 EARTHQUAKE WHICH RUINED ENTIRE DOWNTOWN AREA OF CAPITAL.

2. FIRE AREA HAS BEEN EVACUATED, BUT 9 A.M. GMT NEWS REPORTED 1 DEAD AND 7 INJURED (2 SERIOUSLY).

3. EFFORTS TO RESTRICT EXTENSION OF FIRE CONTINUE.

1. THE DEVASTATING FIRE WHICH SWEPT THROUGH THE CENTRE OF LISBON YESTERDAY HAS FINALLY BEEN EXTINGUISHED. AN OFFICIAL STATEMENT BY VICE-PRIME MINISTER EURICO DE MELO SPOKE OF ONE DEAD, FOURTEEN INJURED, AND BETWEEN 200-300 PERSONS RENDERED HOMELESS. THE HOMELESS ARE BEING GIVEN EMERGENCY SHELTER IN PUBLICLY OWNED ACCOMODATION. MILITARY, POLICE, AND CIVIL AUTHORITIES INVOLVED IN RESCUE OPERATIONS.

2. ALTHOUGH DAMAGE ASSESSMENT NOT YET AVAILABLE, THE NATIONAL INSURANCE INSTITUTE, IN A PRELIMINARY ESTIMATE OF DAMAGE, SAID DAMAGE WOULD RUN INTO MILLIONS OF DOLLARS.
