Country Visit of WFP Executive Director
• On 8-9 April, WFP Executive Director Cindy McCain visited the Philippines to attend the Asia and the Pacific Food Security Forum organized by the Asian Development Bank (ADB). During her visit, she i) delivered a keynote address at the Forum to strengthen partnerships for food and nutrition security, climate resilience, and social protection and ii) met with high-level officials from ADB, the Philippine Government, and the United States Embassy.
Walang Gutom: Food e-Voucher Programme
• WFP and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) reached 2,361 households (11,805 people) under the pilot implementation of the Walang Gutom (No Hunger) 2027. Each household received a food e-voucher worth US$55 (PHP 3,000) which they can spend on nutritious food sold by accredited retailers. WFP also conducted a cash and voucher assistance training for DSWD partners, to enhance their knowledge on participant eligibility and utilization of food evouchers.
Emergency Preparedness
• WFP arranged a learning visit to Indonesia for DSWD delegates for mobile food kitchen solutions and how these fit into national emergency preparedness and response systems. A mobile food kitchen provides crisis-affected communities with hot nutritious meals to ensure that immediate food needs are met. Lessons from the visit will inform i) policy design to institutionalize the mobile food kitchen and ii) the development of training curricula on the deployment of the kitchen and food management.
• The DSWD delegates also gained insights on regional disaster coordination system and policy during their visit to the ASEAN* Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on Disaster Management (AHA Centre) in Jakarta. The AHA Centre coordinates disaster management activities among ASEAN Member States and with international organizations. DSWD officials learned about i) the AHA Centre's strategic and operational coordination mechanisms, ii) innovative hazard mapping and forecasting technology, and iii) strategies for disaster monitoring, reporting, and coordination.
