At the beginning of December, typhoon Bopha caused hundreds of deaths and great devastation on the Philippine island of Mindanao. The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) has now contributed CHF 600,000 to emergency relief efforts.

Almost a year after the devastating effects of the tornado Washi, floods and landslides caused by typhoon Bopha on the island of Mindanao in the south of the Philippines have wiped out entire villages and caused tremendous devastation. The number of deaths has now risen to 740, and about 900 people are still missing. More than 130,000 houses have been damaged or destroyed. About 800,000 people have had to seek refuge in evacuation centres or an emergency private accommodation.

Following the call for help by the UN, Switzerland is contributing CHF 600,000 to the operations of the World Food Programme (WFP). The WFP is providing badly needed food supplies to the population affected by this emergency, in cooperation with the authorities and with local civil society.
