Singapore Red Cross Extends $100,000 Humanitarian Aid to Flood Survivors

Singapore, 10 August 2012 – The Singapore Red Cross (SRC) will contribute $100,000 worth of relief supplies to assist survivors of the floods in Manila, Philippines. Comprising food items (canned and fresh foods) and family kits (kitchen utensils, toiletries), these supplies will be distributed by SRC volunteers on Monday, to those residing in evacuation centres.

“We have been in close contact with our sister National Society, the Philippine Red Cross, since the onset of the crisis. More than 200,000 people in Metro Manila and parts of Luzon have been evacuated by Philippine Red Cross. The emergency relief supplies, from funds raised by the people of Singapore, will directly benefit these communities. The Singapore Red Cross is committed to help the Philippine Red Cross in this massive relief operation,” said Mr Benjamin William, Secretary General of the Singapore Red Cross.

Typhoons Saola, Damrey and more recently Haikui have brought the heaviest rains the Philippines has experienced in three years, affecting 1.2 million people across the country.

The Singapore Red Cross will continue to monitor the situation. At this stage, the SRC is not launching a public appeal but will continue to accept walk-in donations for ongoing relief efforts by its sister national society.
