UNDRO INFORMATION REPORT NO. 1

1. VOLCANIC EXPLOSIONS FROM MOUNT MAYON IN CENTRAL PHILIPPINES HAVE SPEWED FIERY ASH SEVERAL MILES INTO THE SKY AND SENT INCANDESCENT ROCK AVALANCHES STREAMING DOWN ITS SLOPES TOWARDS THE NORTHWEST AND SOUTHWEST.

2. PHILIPPINE INSTITUTE OF VOLCANOLOGY REPORTS ASH AS FALLING OVER RADIUS OF MORE THAN 10 MILES (15 KMS) AND TREMORS HAVE BEEN FELT OVER WIDE AREA. ACCORDING TO THE INSTITUTE, IT IS EXPECTED THAT MOUNT MAYON WILL CONTINUE TO ERUPT FOR AT LEAST ONE MONTH.

3. AS OF 14 SEPTEMBER, TOTAL 16,290 PERSONS EVACUATED FROM DARAGA, LEGASPI CITY, GUINOBATAN, CAMALIG, LIGAO, TABACO AND STO. DOMINGO.

4. TO DATE NO CASUALTIES HAVE BEEN REPORTED AND LAVA AVALANCHES SPILLING DOWN THE MOUNTAIN HAVE NOT REACHED INHABITED AREAS.

1. SEVEN MORE ERUPTIONS OF STRONG INTENSITY HAVE BEEN OBSERVED. ON 16 SEPT ASH-LADEN CLOUDS EJECTED TO APPROX 3 KMS. OF 29 MILD ERUPTIONS RECORDED, 13 WERE ACCOMPANIED BY ASH FLOWS AT SOUTH EASTERN SECTOR OF VOLCANO. HEAVY ASH FLOWS IN SEVERAL BARANGAYS (ADMINISTRATIVE DISTRICTS) SITUATED SOUTHWEST AND NORTHWEST OF THE VOLCANO. CONSIDERABLE AMOUNTS OF ASH AND OTHER PYROCLASTIC DEPOSITS HAVE ACCUMULATED AROUND MAYON'S UPPER SLOPE. DURING HEAVY RAINS, THESE ASH DEPOSITS ARE POTENTIAL MUDFLOW SOURCES. MUDFLOWS CAUSED BY RAINS OCCURRED IN SOUTHWEST SECTOR OF THE VOLCANO AND REACHED AS FAR AS THE OUTSKIRTS OF GUINOBATAN. MATERIAL CONTINUED TO FLOW TO THE SOUTHWEST IN THE DIRECTION OF BARANGAYS MASARAWAL, PANINILA AND KIRANGAY.

2. EIGHTEEN EVACUATION CENTERS HAVE BEEN SET UP BY THE PROVINCIAL DISASTER CO-ORDINATING COMMITTEE IN MUNICIPALITIES CAMALIG, DARAGA, GUINOBATAN, LEGASPI CITY, LIGAO AND STO. DOMINGO. NUMBER OF EVACUEES HAS NOW RISEN TO ALMOST 26,000 PERSONS.

3. PHILIPPINE INSTITUTE OF VOLCANOLOGY HAS FORECAST POSSIBLE INTENSIFIED ACTIVITY AND RECOMMENDED PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES AND EVACUATION OF OUTLYING BARANGAYS. PREDICTION THAT MAYON'S VOLCANIC ACTIVITY MAY LAST TWO MONTHS. 4. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA HAS CONTRIBUTED US DLRS 25,000 FOR RELIEF ASSISTANCE.

5. LEAGUE OF RED CROSS SOCIETIES HAS LAUNCHED APPEAL FOR RELIEF ASSISTANCE (SF 2,054,500/US DLRS 856,042). CONTRIBUTIONS AS OF 18 SEPTEMBER SF 800,000.

1. AFTER FEW DAYS LULL, NEW EXPLOSIONS ON 23 SEPTEMBER (THE LARGEST SINCE ERUPTION BEGAN 9 SEPTEMBER). TREMORS STILL CONTINUOUS BUT SLACKENING SLIGHTLY.

2. PROVINCIAL DISASTER CO-ORDINATING COUNCIL HAS WIDENED THE RADIUS OF DANGER ZONE FROM PREVIOUS 8 KM TO 10 KM.

3. UNDRO/UNDP RESIDENT CO-ORDINATOR REPORTS AS OF 25 SEPT:

- 44,094 PERSONS (7,997 FAMILIES) ARE ACCOMODATED IN 42 EVACUATION CENTRES.

DAMAGE REPORTED AS OF 27 SEPT:

- LEGASPI CITY: 98 PERCENT AGRICULTURAL CROPS DAMAGED, WATER SPRINGS DESTROYED, ROADS WASHED OUT, SOME HOUSES DESTROYED.

- STO. DOMINGO: MAJOR PART OF COCONUT PLANTATIONS TOTALLY COVERED BY MUDFLOWS, SOME RICE FIELDS PARTIALLY DAMAGED.

- MALILIPOT: ALL HOUSES IN PUROK (BARRIO) SUBMERGED AND CHAPEL BURIED.

4. MINISTRY OF SOCIAL SERVICES AND DEVELOPMENT HAS CARRIED OUT RELIEF ASSISTANCE AS OF 25 SEPTEMBER, TOTALLING PESOS 1,196,532 (US DLRS 66,474) PROVIDED TO 41,193 PERSONS (7,252 FAMILIES).

5. U.S. GEOLOGICAL SURVEY HAS PROVIDED THREE VOLCANOLOGISTS AND MONITORING EQUIPMENT.
