On 1 and 6 January, magmatic eruption, ashfall, pyroclastic flow and rockfall events occurred at Mayon volcano located in Albay Province, Bicol Region, south-eastern Luzon Island.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) places the volcano under Alert Level 3 (intensified unrest).
According to the Asean Disaster Information Network (ADINet), 3 515 people have been internally displaced in 13 evacuation centres. The entry into the 6 km radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) is currently strictly prohibited, as issued by the local authorities.
