UNDRO INFORMATION REPORT NO. 1
9 OCTOBER 1989

1. ON 6 OCTOBER, TYPHOON 'ANGELA' (LOCAL NAME RUBING) HIT NORTHERN LUZON, SAME AREA AFFECTED BY TYPHOON 'SARA' IN SEPTEMBER.

2. DAMAGE REPORT SO FAR PROVIDED BY OFFICE OF CIVIL DEFENCE SHOWS THAT 45 DEAD, 50 MISSING, 4 INJURED, MORE THAN 15,600 PEOPLE AFFECTED, OVER 2,000 HOUSES DESTROYED IN PROVINCES OF CAGAYAN, ILOCOS NORTE AND NUEVA VISCAYA. TOTAL ECONOMIC LOSS ESTIMATED AT US DLRS 2,600,000.

3. SURVEY TEAMS OF REGIONAL DISASTER COORDINATING COUNCILS STILL ASSESSING EXTENT DAMAGE AND ASSISTANCE NEEDED.

4. DEPARTMENT SOCIAL WELFARE AND DEVELOPMENT PROVIDED AFFECTED PEOPLE WITH 200 SACKS RICE.

UNDRO/UNDP RESIDENT REPRESENTATIVE REPORTS UPDATED DAMAGE AS FOLLOWS: 118 DEAD, 28 MISSING, 189 INJURED, 180,000 PEOPLE AFFECTED. OVER 32,000 HOUSES DESTROYED, TOTAL ECONOMIC LOSSES ESTIMATED AT US DLRS 5.4 MILLION. 3. DISTRIBUTION OF RELIEF SUPPLIES IN AFFECTED AREAS ONGOING IN COOPERATION WITH LOCAL TRANSPORTATION SERVICE COMMITTEE. 4. DEPARTMENT SOCIAL WELFARE AND DEVELOPMENT EXPANDED ASSISTANCE IN FOOD AND EMERGENCY RELIEF SUPPLIES. NATIONAL RED CROSS SOCIETY RELEASED 8.6 MT OF FOOD. 5. 1. OFFICE OF CIVIL DEFENCE PROVIDED FINAL REPORT AS OF 18 OCTOBER DESCRIBING DAMAGE OF 119 DEAD, 191 INJURED, 28 MISSING, 205,000 PEOPLE AFFECTED AND 84,000 RENDERED HOMELESS.

2. 14,000 HOUSES TOTALLY DAMAGED AND OVER 19,000 PARTIALLY. OVERALL ECONOMIC LOSSES OF AGRICULTURE, INFRASTRUCTURE AND PRIVATE PROPERTIES ESTIMATED TO US DLRS 8 MILLION.

3. ACCORDING TO STATISTICS PROVIDED, MORE THAN HALF OF DEATH TOLL AND OF DAMAGE ORIGINATED IN CAGAYAN PROVINCE.

4. UNDRO HAS NOT RECEIVED REQUEST TO LAUNCH AN INTERNATIONAL ASSISTANCE AND THIS IS LAST INFORMATION REPORT ON THIS DISASTER.
