PHILIPPINES - TYPHOON
INFORMATION REPORT NO.1
22 OCTOBER 1985

1. TYPHOON DOT (SALING) HIT WITH MAGNITUDE 5.5 SOUTHERN AND CENTRAL LUZON ON 18 AND 19 OCTOBER 1985. MOST HEAVILY-AFFECTED ARE PROVINCES AURORA, NUEVA ECIJA, TARLAC AND BUR LACAN.

2. INITIAL REPORTS INDICATE 39 DEAD, AND 30 INJURED. 52,454 FAMILIES (APPROX. 250,000 PEOPLE) ARE AFFECTED.

3. CROP DAMAGES COVER A SURFACE OF MORE THAN 40,000 HECTARES. 9,492 HOUSES ARE DESTROYED AND 17,831 DAMAGED.

4. DAMAGE TO CROPS EVALUATED AT 24,120,780 PESOS (US DLRS 1,355,100) AND TO LIVESTOCK AT 209,000 PESOS (US DLRS 11,741). DAMAGE TO PRIVATE PROPERTY ESTIMATED AT 400,000 PESOS (US DLRS 22,471) AND TO GOVERNMENT INFRASTRUCTURE (DIKES, ROADS, BUILDINGS) AT 2,080,000 PESOS (US DLRS 116,853).

5. RELIEF SUPPLIES ARE PRESENTLY DISTRIBUTED BY LOCAL RED CROSS AND NATIONAL CIVIL DEFENCE.

6. UNICEF HAS BEEN REQUESTED TO PROVIDE WATER PURIFYING TABLETS. NO OTHER REQUEST FOR INTERNATIONAL ASSISTANCE HAS BEEN MADE KNOWN TO UNDRO.

7. DONORS ARE REQUESTED TO INFORM UNDRO DIRECTLY, PREFERABLY BY TELEX (28148 UNDR CH) OF THEIR CONTRIBUTIONS AND CORRESPONDING VALUE.

LATEST DATA ON DAMAGE CAUSED BY TYPHOON DOT (SALING) ARE AS FOLLOWS:

1. DEAD 83, INJURED 24, FAMILIES AFFECTED 103,700, PERSONS AFFECTED 562,729.

2. HOUSES DESTROYED 22,022, DAMAGED 139,643.

3. FINANCIAL ESTIMATES OF DAMAGE CAUSED: CROPS/LIVESTOCK/FISHPONDS 423 MILLION PESOS (US DLRS 23,764,044) INFRASTRUCTURE 67.7 MILLION PESOS (US DLRS 3,803,370) AND PRIVATE PROPERTY 3.2 MILLION PESOS (US DLRS 179,775).

4. RELIEF ASSISTANCE PROVIDED BY PHILIPPINE RED CROSS, GOVERNMENT, LOCAL AUTHORITIES AND CIVIC ORGANIZATIONS.

5. LRCS HAS MADE AN APPEAL FOR SF 1,210,000 (US DLRS 526,086).

6. TO DATE THE GOVERNMENT HAS NOT REQUESTED UNDRO TO LAUNCH AN APPEAL FOR INTERNATIONAL ASSISTANCE.

7. DONORS ARE REQUESTED TO INFORM UNDRO DIRECTLY, PREFERABLY BY TELEX (28148 UNDR CH) OF THEIR CONTRIBUTIONS AND CORRESPONDING VALUE.

1. MOST RECENT DATA PROVIDED BY UNDRO RESIDENT REPRESENTATIVE ARE AS FOLLOWS: DEAD 81 (CORRECTED FIGURE), INJURED 24, FAMILIES AFFECTED 242,023, PERSONS AFFECTED 1,183,602.

2. HOUSES DESTROYED 52,933, DAMAGED 200,450.

3. FINANCIAL ESTIMATES OF DAMAGE CAUSED: CROPS/LIVESTOCK/FISH PONDS 1.03 BILLION PESOS (US DLRS 57,800,000), INFRASTRUCTURE PESOS 77.7 MILLION (US DLRS 4,360,000), PRIVATE PROPERTY PESOS 3.8 MILLION (US DLRS 213,243).

4. RELIEF OPERATIONS ARE CARRIED OUT BY NATIONAL AUTHORITIES AND THE PHILIPPINE RED CROSS.

5. CARITAS INTERNATIONALIS HAS MADE AN APPEAL FOR US DLRS 875,574 (BUILDING MATERIAL) AND US DLRS 138,350 (LIVELIHOOD PROGRAMME).
