UNDRO INFORMATION REPORT NO.1
9 NOVEMBER 1988

1. ON 7 NOVEMBER TYPHOON 'SKIP' WITH CENTER WINDS UP TO 175 KM/H HIT PHILIPPINES AND TRIGGERED LANSLIDES AND FLOODS. MOST AFFECTED AREAS ARE NATIONAL CAPITAL, SOUTHERN TAGALOG, BICOL AND WESTERN VISAYAS WHICH HAVE NOT YET RECOVERED FROM DAMAGE BY TYPHOON RUBY. DISRUPTION OF COMMUNICATIONS ARE HAMPERING DAMAGE ASSESSMENT.

2. UNDRO/UNDP RESIDENT REPRESENTATIVE REPORTS: 38 DEAD, 148,000 PEOPLE AFFECTED, MORE THAN 6,000 HOUSES DAMAGED/DESTROYED.

3. LOCAL AUTHORITIES AND NGOS DISTRIBUTING RICE, SARDINES, NOODLES AND CLOTHING.

4. UNDRO HAS NOT SO FAR RECEIVED REQUEST FOR INTERNATIONAL ASSISTANCE FOR THIS DISASTER.

1. TYPHOON 'SKIP' (YONING) CAUSED 128 DEATHS, 29 INJURED, 161 MISSING, ACCORDING TO UNDRO/UNDP RESIDENT REPRESENTATIVE. OVER ONE MILLION PEOPLE REPORTED AFFECTED, AMONG WHOM 45,000 HOMELESS. 25,000 HOUSES TOTALLY/PARTIALLY DAMAGED. DAMAGES TO CROPS/INFRASTRUCTURE/PROPERTIES ESTIMATED AT USDLRS 32 MILLION. ISLAND OF SAMAR MOST SEVERELY AFFECTED.

2. AUTHORITIES AND PHILIPPINES NATIONAL RED CROSS CONTINUING RELIEF ASSISTANCE. SUPPORT RECEIVED FROM USA, EEC, ICRC, DANISH AND CHINESE RED CROSS.

3. NO REQUEST FOR INTERNATIONAL ASSISTANCE RECEIVED SO FAR.
