PHILIPPINES - TYPHOON KORYN
DHA-GENEVA INFORMATION REPORT NO. 1
26 JUNE 1993

1. THIS MORNING TYPHOON KORYN HIT NORTHERN PHILIPPINES KILLING AT LEAST SEVEN PEOPLE AND UNLEASHING MUDFLOWS FORCING MORE THAN 18,000 PEOPLE TO FLEE THEIR HOMES, ACCORDING TO GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS.

2. KORYN'S 180 KM/H WINDS DAMAGED INFRASTRUCTURE, CAUSING POWER AND TELEPHONE LINE CUTS. ENSUING RAINS FLOODED LOW-LYING AREAS MANILA AND AFFECTED AIR TRAFFIC.

3. A WIDE TORRECT OF MUD AND ROCKS FROM MOUNT PINATUBO VOLCANO FILLED THE SACOBIA RIVER IN TARLAR AND PAMPANGA PROVINCES.

4. THE PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC DECLARED A STATE OF CALAMITY ACROSS THE NORTHERN PHILIPPINES IN 16 PROVINCES AND SIX CITIES AND ORDERED A SPECIAL WATCH FOR SHIPS IN THE PATH OF THE TYPHOON.

5. THE PRESIDENT APPROVED THE RELEASE OF USDRLS 920,000 FROM A DISASTER TO PROVIDE RELIEF TO THE 16 PROVINCES AND 6 CITIES HIT BY THE TYPHOON. NO REQUEST FOR INTERNATIONAL HAS NOT BEEN RECEIVED SO FAR.

1. ON 27 JUNE, NAT'L. DISASTER COORDINATING COUNCIL PROVIDED FOLLOWING UPDATE OF SITUATION:

CORDILLERA AUTONOMOUS REGION (INCL. BAGUIO CITY), REGIONS I - IV (INCL. METRO MANILA)
CASUALTIES:
2 DEATHS IN BAGUIO CITY
PERSONS AFFECTED:
5,872 FAMILIES (29,413 PERSONS)
EVACUATED:
2,938 FAMILIES (14,322 PERSONS)
HOUSES DAMAGED:
233 TOTALLY, 454 PARTIALLY
EST. TOTAL PROPERTY DAMAGE:
11.22 MILLION PESOS (USD 441,730)
3. ALL ROADS TO BAGUIO CITY CLOSED BY MAJOR LANDSLIDES. A FEW SIMILAR LANDSLIDES IN REGION II. DEPT. OF PUBLIC WORKS AND HIGHWAYS CLEARING UP. ARMED FORCES/NATIONAL POLICE HELPING TRANSPORT AFFECTED POPULATION TO EVACUATION CENTERS AND MONITOR PEACE/ORDER WHERE NECESSARY.

4. RELIEF OPERATIONS LED BY DIFFERENT SERVICE COMMITTEES OF LOCAL DISASTER COORDINATING COUNCILS AT REGIONAL/PROVINCIAL/ MUNICIPAL LEVELS. DEPT. OF SOCIAL WELFARE AND DEVELOPMENT IN REGION III HAS RELEASED RELIEF GOODS IN TARLAC PROVINCE AND RICE IN NUEVA ECIJA PROVINCE. GOVT PROVIDING ADDITIONAL RELIEF GOODS.

5. GOVT HAS NOT APPEALED FOR INTERNATIONAL ASSISTANCE.
