Since 14 May, heavy rainfall and thunderstorms due to the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) have been affecting the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, in the southwestern part of the island of Mindanao, southern Philippines causing floods that have resulted in people displacement and damage.
According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), as of 21 May, a total of 233,945 people have been affected in Maguindanao del Sur (BARMM) province, including 6,115 inside eight evacuation centres. In addition, three houses have been damaged, one bridge and four roads have been blocked by flooding in the same area.
Over the next 48 hours, more heavy rainfall and thunderstorms are forecasted over the southern Philippines, and red and orange flood warnings have been issued.
