Philippines: Humanitarian Snapshot (as of 17 September 2013)


Zamboanga and Basilan emergency. For more than a week, fighting between a faction of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) caused displacement of 96,680 people from 31 barangays in Zamboanga and Basilan. At least 76,155 people are now in evacuations centres and an unknown number of civilians remain trapped in the affected coastal villages

Southwest monsoon rains (Habagat) triggered widespread flooding in Metro Manila and nearby provinces on 19 August. A week after the heavy monsoon rains, more than 638,000 people returned to their homes. Flooding persists in low-lying areas in the provinces sorrounding Metro Manila.
