Situation

1. A week of torrential rain at the end of January 2000 has caused flash floods on the island of Mindanao in the southern Philippines. The affected areas are the so-called Region XI, which includes Davao Oriental, Davao del Norte and Compostela Valley, and Agusan del Sur, Agusan del Norte and Surigao del Sur in Caraga.

2. According to a report issued by the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) of the Government of Philippines on 1 February, the damages caused by the flooding are as follows:

National Response

3. Disaster management seems to be under control at local level. The NDCC has coordinated with the local disaster coordination councils in the area to speed up relief efforts for the victims. The Government has also extended medical services and distributed relief goods to the affected families.

International Response

4. The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) is in close contact with the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Manila, Philippines and will revert with further information if the situation warrants it.

5. No request for international assistance has been received by OCHA to date.
