UNDRO INFORMATION REPORT NO. 1
6 FEBRUARY 1989

1. FOLLOWING CONTINUOUS RAINS DUE TO LOW-PRESSURE ZONE SINCE PAST 6 WEEKS, AREAS OF SORSOGON, CAMARINES SUR AND SAMAR HAVE BEEN HIT BY FLASH FLOODS.

2. PRESIDENT AQUINO DECLARED STATE OF EMERGENCY. OFFICE OF CIVIL DEFENCE REPORTS DAMAGE AS FOLLOWS:

  • 34 DEAD, 9 INJURED, 4 MISSING
  • OVER 150,000 PEOPLE AFFECTED, 2,000 HOMELESS
  • INITIAL ESTIMATE OF DAMAGE US DOLLARS 2 MILLION

3. DEPT. OF SOCIAL WELFARE RELEASED US DOLLARS 370,000 FOR FOOD (RICE/SARDINES).

DEPT. OF HEALTH SENT MEDICINES WORTH US DOLLARS 560,000 PART OF WHICH CAME FROM GOVERNMENT OF ITALY.

NATIONAL RED CROSS SOCIETY AND LOCAL PRIVATE ORGANIZATIONS PROVIDING FLOOD VICTIMS WITH FOOD, CLOTHES AND RELIEF SUPPLIES.

4. UNDRO HAS NOT SO FAR RECEIVED OFFICIAL REQUEST FOR INTERNATIONAL ASSISTANCE.

1. OFFICE OF CIVIL DEFENCE UPDATED DAMAGE AS FOLLOWS:

  • 39 DEAD, 11 INJURED, 5 MISSING
  • OVER 260,000 PEOPLE AFFECTED
  • MORE THAN 2,500 HOUSES TOTALLY/PARTIALLY DESTROYED
  • TOTAL DAMAGE ESTIMATED APPROXIMATELY US DOLLARS 6 MILLION

2. PRESIDENT AQUINO ORDERED RELEASE OF EMERGENCY FUND. DEPT. SOCIAL WELFARE AND DEPT. HEALTH EXTENDED THEIR RELIEF ASSISTANCE. DEPT. PUBLIC WORKS UNDERTAKING REPAIR OF COLLAPSED BRIDGES. RELIEF EFFORT BEING CONTINUED BUT HAMPERED BY BAD WEATHER.

3. UNDRO HAS NOT SO FAR RECEIVED OFFICIAL REQUEST FOR INTERNATIONAL ASSISTANCE.
