OVERVIEW
The Southwest Monsoon enhanced by Tropical Cyclone "CARINA" will bring heavy to intense rains (100-200 mm) to Zambales, Bataan, Occidental Mindoro, Ilocos Region, Abra, and Benguet, with moderate to heavy rains (50- 100 mm) in Metro Manila and other regions from July 22 to July 24. Flooding and landslides are likely in susceptible areas. Continuous rainfall has caused flash floods and landslides in low-lying and riverbank areas in Mindanao, particularly affecting BARMM (Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao) and Region 12.
The floods and landslides impacted 2 cities & 43 municipalities. Recently, flash floods & landslides affected Matanog, Maguindanao del Norte, and several municipalities in Lanao del Sur. By July 11, Pagalungan and parts of Maguindanao del Sur, as well as Pikit in North Cotabato, were similarly affected.
According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) - Republic of Philippines, The Southwest Monsoon has affected 573,000 people (118,000 families) across 7 regions, 17 provinces, and 53 cities/municipalities. There have been 349,000 displacements, and 53 evacuation centers have been activated.
The disaster resulted in 7 fatalities, 2 injuries, and 1 missing person. Additionally, 133 houses were damaged, 71 road sections, 5 bridge sections, and 1 seaport affected. Power and water supplies were disrupted in several areas, and agricultural damage is estimated at $364,000.
RELIEF INTERNATIONAL'S RESPONSE
Relief International conducted a Rapid Need Assessment in the municipalities of Special Geographic Areas (SGA) and Pagalungan and committed to providing life-saving interventions to address the immediate needs of affected populations. According to the WASH Cluster assessment report, supplying WASH kits to affected communities is a top priority. Relief International has mobilized internal funds to support 150 flood-affected households with hygiene kits comprising dental kits, sanitary kits, and potable water containers. Additionally, Relief International will implement need-based assistance like routine immunization and conduct outreach initiatives. These measures aim to prevent health outbreaks that may arise from this emergency, ensuring the affected communities receive essential hygiene supplies and healthcare support.
