The Philippines - Earthquake - update (NDRRMC, PHIVOLCS, OCHA, DG ECHO) (ECHO Daily Flash of 02 August 2022)

  • Following the 7.0 magnitude earthquake that struck Abra Province in the Northern Philippines on 27 July 2022, the number of people in need continues to increase. On 2 August 2022, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported 404,370 affected people. During the last 24 hours, 246 aftershocks were recorded out of total 2,202 aftershocks so far.

  • A joint rapid needs assessment was conducted by UN agencies on 30-31 July 2022 under existing bilateral programmes with the government agencies and in coordination with NGOs, including DG ECHO partners. Due to successive aftershocks, affected families are staying in self-settled camp sites/open spaces. Some families are living in landslide-prone areas. Key priorities include shelter kits, medical supplies and mental health and psychosocial support.

  • DG ECHO has been conducting an assessment in the affected areas since 29 July 2022.
