An earthquake of 7.4 M at a depth of 58.1 km occurred over the sea in the southern Philippines, on 10 October at 01.43 (UTC) (09.43 local time). The epicentre was approximately 17 km east of the coast of Mindanao Island, 20 km east of Santiago municipality, in the province of Davao Oriental, and approximately 120 km north-east of Davao City. Several aftershocks with magnitudes between 4.8 M and 5.9 M were recorded in the area. USGS PAGER estimates that up to 30,000 people were exposed to severe shaking, and 2,287,000 to very strong shaking.

According to media, as of 10 October, at least two people died in Davao Oriental province, and 250 people have been evacuated from a damaged hospital and displaced in temporary shelters. Several structures have been damaged, including hospitals and schools, and an evacuation order has been issued for the coastal areas.

National authorities were mobilised to assist the affected people.
