EARTHQUAKE - PHILIPPINES
UNDRO INFORMATION REPORT NO. 1
9 FEBRUARY 1990

1. STRONG EARTHQUAKE OCCURRED THURSDAY 15:16, 8 FEBRUARY (7:16 AM, 8 FEBRUARY GMT) IN SOUTHERN PHILIPPINES APPROX. 60 KM SOUTH OF CEBU CITY OR 600 KM SOUTHEAST OF MANILA. MAGNITUDE MEASURED 6.6 ON RICHTER SCALE.

2. PRELIMINARY EPICENTRE LOCATED 9.68 DEGREES NORTH LATITUDE AND 124.05 DEGREES EAST LONGITUDE. STRONG AFTERSHOCK OCCURRED 31 MINUTES LATER WHICH REGISTERED 6.1 ON RICHTER SCALE.

3. NO MAJOR DAMAGE SO FAR REPORTED. NATIONAL DISASTER COORDINATING COUNCIL THROUGH PHILIPPINES INSTITUTE OF VOLCANOLOGY/SEISMOLOGY CONTINUING TO MONITOR SITUATION.

1. CIVIL DEFENSE REPORTS IN BOHOL PROVINCE (REGION VII): EARTHQUAKE CAUSED ONE DEATH AND FOUR INJURED, 34,500 PERSONS EVACUATED FROM COASTAL BARANGAYS TO HIGHER GROUNDS IN VIEW OF POSSIBLE TSUNAMIS.

2. PROPERTY DAMAGE: 492 HOUSES IN THREE TOWNS PARTIALLY AND 131 TOTALLY DESTROYED. ESTIMATED VALUE OF DAMAGE TO ROADS, BRIDGES AND BUILDINGS IS PESOS 18.6 MILLION (USD 900,000).

3. RELIEF SERVICE COMMITTEE HEADED BY DEPT. SOCIAL WELFARE PROVIDING EMERGENCY ASSISTANCE TO EVACUEES, NATIONAL RED CROSS TO OTHER PEOPLE IN AFFECTED AREAS.
