TROPICAL CYCLONES
Eighteen Tropical Cyclones entered the Philippines Area of Responsibility in 2022, of which 5 made landfall. Most notable were Tropical Storm Agaton/Megi that caused landslide in Leyte, Super Typhoon Karding/Noru that left a trail of damages in Regions 3 and 4A and Typhoon Paeng/Nalgae that caused flooding in Maguindanao. In December 2021, Typhoon Odette/Rai brought massive destruction in Regions 4B, 6, 7, 8 and Caraga where a response was needed until 2022.
EARTHQUAKES
In 2022, PHIVOLCS recorded more than 14,300 earthquake events. Almost 96% of these events were below magnitude 4.0. Around 517 were between magnitude 4 to 5, 69 were between 5.1 to 6 and 12 were above 6.0. The most notable earthquake was the 7.0 earthquake in Abra last July 27, 2022.
MINDANAO DISPLACEMENT
More than 382,000 people were displaced in 2022 due to conflict and natural hazards in Mindanao. Around 265,000 have returned home and 117,000 are still displaced. Out of the 117,000 displaced, 51,000 are due to Typhoon Nalgae, 57,000 due to flooding brought by the shear line while the rest are due to conflict. This is in addition to the 98,000 people displaced since 2013.
