One dies, thousands flee floods in Philippines

MANILA, Feb 16 (Reuters) - One person drowned and more than 7,000 others fled their homes after floods caused by heavy rains swept low-lying areas of Davao city in the southern Philippines, relief officials said on Wednesday.

The floods, which reached up to six feet (1.82 metres) deep in places, hit the area on Tuesday but have now begun to subside, regional civil defence director Carmelito Lupo said.

Damage to rice plantations in flooded areas is being assessed, he said.

Davao is home to around one million people.
