I. SITUATION OVERVIEW

23 December 2016

The Severe Tropical Storm (STS) with international name NOCK-TEN entered the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) and was named "NINA" with maximum sustained winds of up to 105 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 130 kph. It is forecasted to move West Northwest at 20 kph.

24 December 2016

"NINA" has intensified into a Typhoon and continues to move in a West Northwest direction with a maximum sustained winds of up to 135 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 165 kph moving West Northwest at 17 kph. Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal (TCWS) No.1 is hoisted in Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Albay, Catanduanes, Sorsogon, Masbate including Ticao and Burias Islands, Northern Samar and Eastern Samar.

Typhoon "NINA" has maintained its strength as it continues to move closer to Bicol Region. At 7:00 AM today, the eye of Typhoon "NINA" was located based on all available data including Guivan and Virac doppler radar at 195 km East of Virac, Catanduanes with maximum sustained winds of 175 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 215 kph.

It is forecasted to move west at 15 kph. It is expected to make landfall over Catanduanes by this afternoon or evening. Its estimated rainfall amount is from moderate to heavy within its 500 km diameter of the typhoon. Storm surge height of up to 2.5 meters is possible over the coastal areas of Camarines Sur, Camarines Norte, Albay and Catanduanes.

TCWS No. 3 is hoisted over Catanduanes, Albay, Camarines Norte and Camarines Sur; TCWS No. 2 in Quezon including Polillo Island, Marinduque, Masbate including Ticao and Burias Islands, Sorsogon, Oriental Mindoro, Batangas, Laguna and Romblon in Luzon and Northern Samar in Visayas; and TCWS No. 1 over Metro Manila, Bataan, Nueva Ecija, Southern Nueva Vizcaya, Southern Quirino, Zambales, Pampanga, Tarlac, Bulacan, Cavite, Rizal, Aurora and Occidental Mindoro including Lubang Island in Luzon and over Aklan, Capiz, Samar, Eastern Samar, Biliran, Leyte and Bantayan Island in Visayas.
