Today I announce that the Australian Government is providing emergency relief assistance to people in the Philippines displaced by Typhoon Tembin.
The typhoon caused widespread flooding and damage to infrastructure across the southern province of Mindanao over Christmas. Communities in Mindanao were already suffering due to conflict and the fight against militants aligned with Islamic State in Marawi City.
According to Philippine Government reports, approximately 800,000 people have been affected by the typhoon. Over 150 people have died and many evacuees remain unable to return to their homes due to severe flood damage.
Australia is providing $645,000 in assistance to help 25,000 people in urgent need. Our assistance will support the provision of tarpaulins, blankets, mosquito nets, hygiene items and jerry cans, through our partnership with the Philippine Red Cross, which is working closely with the Philippine Government.
The Philippines is one of the most natural disaster-prone countries in the world. Australia remains committed to supporting emergency responses in the Philippines, when required, and to strengthening local disaster resilience.
