Hope on Higher Ground: 175 New Homes to Rise for Flood-Affected Families in Pagalungan

Attachments

In flood-prone Pagalungan, Maguindanao del Sur in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), a new hope is emerging for 175 of the municipality’s most vulnerable families. Islamic Relief Philippines has officially launched the construction of 175 elevated shelters, 15 April 2025, in Barangays Inug-ug and Bagoenged, bringing renewed security and dignity to communities long plagued by displacement and natural disasters.

Each of the 25-square-meter houses will be built on raised foundations to withstand recurring floods, offering families a safe and resilient refuge. Alongside the shelters, community handpumps and communal latrines will also be installed in the community and select schools, coupled with the conduct of hygiene sessions to ensure access to clean water and sanitation — essential elements for health and well-being.

This initiative is part of the major activities of Individuals are Protected from Threats and Environmental Risks through Shelter and WASH *(*I-PROTECTS) Project supported by Islamic Relief Canada.

Islamic Relief Philippines continues to champion inclusive, sustainable solutions in the face of climate-related challenges — helping communities in Pagalungan rise above the floods, and rebuild their lives on firmer ground.
