Typhoon Washi (Sendong) has affected more than 695,000 people and to date, 1,171 people have lost their lives and over 1,000 people are still missing. As a result there are many needs for beneficiaries, especially in Iligan and Cayagan de Oro where over 60% of the total affected are situated. The most primary concern among these needs is providing those in need with access to clean drinking water.
GlobalMedic is operational in Cayagan de Oro and Iligan. Our Filipino Rapid Response Team (RRT) in addition to a Canadian RRT have deployed and are providing clean drinking water to beneficiaries in partnership with ADRA Philippines, ADRA Canada and the Philippine Mine Safety and Environment Association (PMSEA). Additionally, a 1.5 tonne shipment of relief items including 2 million water purification tablets and sachets to purify over 3.6 million litres of water, and a water purification unit which can provide clean drinking water to 30,000 beneficiaries daily have arrived in Cayagan de Oro and will be programmed in the coming days.
