Philippines President Joseph Estrada has pledged emergency funding for four southern provinces struck by devastating floods which have killed at least 24 people.

Heavy rains caused by the La Niña weather pattern last week caused rivers in the provinces to overflow, damaging bridges, roads and power lines.

The National Disaster Coordinating Council in its last report said 24 people had died and eight were missing.

The floodwaters have been subsiding but large areas remain submerged.
