DSWD DROMIC Report #33 on Typhoon “Nika”, Super Typhoon “Ofel”, and Super Typhoon “Pepito” as of 29 November 2024, 6PM

I. Situation Overview

On 09 November 2024 at around 8:00 AM, the Low Pressure Area east of Southern Luzon developed into Tropical Depression (TD) “Nika”. At around 11:00 PM, “Nika” intensified into a Tropical Storm (TS).

On 10 November 2024 at around 5:00 AM, “Nika” further strengthened into a Severe Tropical Storm (STS) and underwent rapid intensification.

On 11 November 2024 at around 5:00 AM, “Nika” intensified into a Typhoon (TY), over the sea east of Aurora and made landfall in the vicinity of Dilasag, Aurora at around 8:10 AM. At around 8:00 PM, “Nika” weakened into an STS as it moved over the coastal waters of Ilocos Sur.

While “Nika” further moved northwestward over the west Philippine Sea on 12 November 2024 at 3:00 AM, TS “Ofel” has entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR). “Nika” had exited PAR at around 2:00 PM on the same day, while “Ofel” strengthened into STS category.

On 13 November 2024 at around 5:00 AM, “Ofel” further intensified into a typhoon and became a Super Typhoon (STY) on 14 November 2024 at around 8:00 AM. By 1:30 PM, the center of its eye made landfall in the vicinity of Baggao, Cagayan and had weakened into a Typhoon. On the same day, STS “Manyi” (International Name) entered PAR at around 8:00 PM and was given the domestic name “Pepito”.

On 15 November 2024 at around 5:00 AM, “Pepito” intensified into a Typhoon. At around 5:00 PM, TY “Ofel” weakened into STS category and exited PAR. At around 11:00 PM, STS “Ofel” re-entered PAR west northwest of Batanes while “Pepito” further intensified as it continued to move west northwestward over the Philippine Sea east of Eastern Visayas.

On 16 November 2024 at around 5:00 AM, “Ofel” continuously weakened as it moved slowly over the sea of Taiwan while “Pepito” moved towards Southern Luzon and Eastern Visayas as it nears STY category. By 11:00 AM, “Pepito” intensified into a Super Typhoon and made landfall over Panganiban, Catanduanes at around 9:40 PM. At 11:00 PM, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) reported that “Ofel” no longer affects the land areas of the country.

On 17 November 2024 at around 5:00 AM, PAGASA reported life-threatening conditions over the eastern section of Southern Luzon as “Pepito” moved over the sea of East of Bicol Region. At around 3:20 PM, “Pepito” made its second landfall in the vicinity of Dipaculao, Aurora. It weakened into a Typhoon while moving over Nueva Vizcaya at 8:00 PM.

On 18 November 2024 at 2:00 AM, “Pepito” further weakened and accelerated northwestward over the West Philippine Sea. “Pepito” exited PAR at around 12:00 PM.

II. Status of Affected Areas and Population

A total of 1,175,436 families or 4,333,590 persons are affected in 8,026 barangays in Regions I, II, III, CALABARZON, MIMAROPA, V, VIII, and CAR (see Annex A).
