5 PACIFIC
Dengue virus serotype 3 (DEN V-3) has reemerged in the Pacific Islands after almost 20 years. DEN V-3 was first identified in the Solomon Islands in Jan 2013 and has since been reported in French Polynesia, Kiribati and Fiji.
Latest figures from health authorities in Fiji indicate 4,600 cases and three deaths. The prolonged absence of DEN V-3 means the populations of most Pacific Island nations have not been previously infected and are therefore largely susceptible. There are also reports of emerging outbreaks of Zika virus in French Polynesia, and Chikungunya virus in Papua New Guinea and Micronesia’s Yap State. WHO is encouraging Pacific Island health authorities to increase surveillance and reporting.
