MYANMAR
Conflict in Myanmar continued to affect civilians across multiple regions, with escalating violence leading to casualties, displacements and damage of homes in mid-October. In Sagaing Region, airstrikes and ground offensives in early October displaced more than 14,000 people and reportedly destroyed over 1,700 houses. During the second week of October, airstrikes in Chin, Mon, Tanintharyi and northern Shan states reportedly killed and injured civilians, including children, while landmine and explosive ordnance incidents in Rakhine, Kayah, Shan and Mandalay caused additional casualties. Humanitarian conditions are worsening as insecurity persists across affected regions.
PHILIPPINES
The effects of Tropical Storm Fengshen (local name Ramil) affected over 133,000 people (37,825 families) in 4 provinces across the country and have resulted in 7 deaths and 2 missing persons. The storm, which traversed the country from 18-20 October, brought heavy rains resulting in multiple flooding and landslide incidents resulting in the displacement of 13,700 people. This number is expected to go down with floods receding and improving weather conditions. Ahead of the storm more than 28,470 people were pre-emptively evacuated in regions 2, 3, 4A, 5, 6, and 8. Roxas City has declared a state of calamity, citing that this is the first time in the city’s history wherein almost all barangays were flooded. Possible widespread damage is expected for the agriculture sector.
