On 26 November, AMDA distributed relief items to 500 families residing in the town of Panganiban in Catanduanes, a province heavily affected by one of the successive typhoons that struck the Philippines. Panganiban was one of the six most-devastated towns in the province. The item donation was organized in collaboration with the Philippine Nurses Association Catanduanes Chapter and the Panganiban Town Office.
The relief items were mainly provided to the residents whose houses were either half or completely destroyed. Based on the initial needs survey, the joint team delivered food items (including 3 kilos of rice, 2 cans of sardines, coffee, sugar, and biscuits) and a bucket to each household.
Additionally, 5 kilos of rice was delivered to the members (nurses and nursing students) of the aforementioned nurses' organization, who resided in any of the six most-affected towns and whose houses were severely damaged.
In preparation for the relief efforts, the nurses’ organization and other AMDA partners helped procure and put together the sets of relief items. More than 30 volunteers gathered to give a helping hand.
After completing the mission, on 28 November, an AMDA nurse who took part in the relief work met with Ms. Gloria Mercado, the head of the Asian Center for Excellence in Development & Security, in Manila before returning to Japan. Ms. Mercado has collaborated with AMDA on many disaster-response projects, and helped facilitate the relief efforts this time.
The following day, the nurse also visited the members of AMDA Philippines to look back on the relief work as a whole. The nurse returned to Japan on 30 November.
Although the relief efforts have already been completed, AMDA will keep monitoring the situation on the ground.
