Peru – Heavy Rains, Floods and Landslides (DE ECHO, INDECI, SENAMHI) (ECHO Daily Flash of 28 March 2017)

  • The impact of the coastal El Niño is still increasing. On 27 March, the number of affected people reached over 920 000, of whom more than 122 000 are homeless.

  • The weather national organization (SENAMHI) forecasts high intensity rains until 1 April in the departments of Ancash, Cajamarca, la Libertad, Lambayeque, Piura and Tumbes.

  • The Piura and Chira rivers overflowed, generating additional damages reported by ongoing DG ECHO field mission.

  • The Amazonas and its tributaries (Marañon, Huallaga) as well as Ucayali River are reaching their critical overflow level.

  • The main response efforts have been provided so far by the government and civil society. While the government is coordinating the assistance, access remains a challenge, in particular in the north.
