Peru – Heavy Rains, Floods and Landslides (DE ECHO, INDECI, SENAMHI) (ECHO Daily Flash of 28 March 2017)

The impact of the coastal El Niño is still increasing. On 27 March, the number of affected people reached over 920 000, of whom more than 122 000 are homeless.

The weather national organization (SENAMHI) forecasts high intensity rains until 1 April in the departments of Ancash, Cajamarca, la Libertad, Lambayeque, Piura and Tumbes.

The Piura and Chira rivers overflowed, generating additional damages reported by ongoing DG ECHO field mission.

The Amazonas and its tributaries (Marañon, Huallaga) as well as Ucayali River are reaching their critical overflow level.

The main response efforts have been provided so far by the government and civil society. While the government is coordinating the assistance, access remains a challenge, in particular in the north.
