Peru: Earthquake victims need help now

Food for the Hungry works to end suffering in Peru
Food for the Hungry is rushing emergency supplies to victims of Saturday's earthquake in Arequipa, Peru.

More than 70 people are confirmed dead and thousands are homeless after a massive earthquake that registered 7.9 on the Richter scale. Officials fear the death toll will rise since many remote villagers live in vulnerable housing made of mud.

Food for the Hungry's Disaster Response Team met immediately to assess the situation and to determine how best to respond. While the Scottsdale based relief and development organization does not have projects in the area damaged by the quake, they've been working in Peru since the early 1980s. Earlier this year, Food for the Hungry distributed food and nearly two tons of warm clothing to flood victims in Peru's eastern highlands.

"We appeal for prayers and financial support of many as we work to help those suffering in Peru," said Ben Homan, president of Food for the Hungry. "Initially, we are partnering with organizations and churches in Peru to provide shelter, food and clothing. The area hit hardest by the earthquake sits at more than 7,700 feet above sea level and tens of thousands of people are now dealing with freezing temperatures. They desperately need our help," he added.

Food for the Hungry was founded in 1971 and helps some of the world's most needy people in 30 countries through child development programs, agriculture and clean water projects, health and nutrition programs, education, microenterprise loans, and disaster relief.
