Summary: On 4 December 2012, 134,809 Swiss francs were allocated from the IFRC’s Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) to support the Peruvian Red Cross (PRC) in delivering immediate assistance for up to 20,000 people. Unearmarked funds to repay DREF are encouraged.
By 26 November 2012 (epidemiological week 45), Peruvian health authorities reported 20,106 cases of dengue in the country, most of these in the eastern region of Peru, with Ucayali being the most affected department, facing 3,010 cases and eleven deaths reported in October and November.
Expecting an increase of the number of cases and with regional health capacity overwhelmed, the Peruvian Red Cross has launched an operation to reach up to 20,000 people with information on the disease and to provide treatment for 500 people, supporting the health authorities in the country.
Due to delays in customs clearance for some relief items, the operations timeframe has been extended by one month and thus this operation is expected to be implemented over four months, and will therefore be completed by 4 April 2013; a Final Report will be made available three months after the end of the operation (by 4 July 2013).
