PERU: FLOODING

KEY FIGURES

801.4K PEOPLE AFFECTED BY FLOODS ACROSS PERU

With 81 per cent of damage records tallied, the Government reports 801,425 people in need of assistance since the start of the rainy season in January. Additionally, 45,101 homes have been either destroyed or rendered uninhabitable. Food, water, sanitation and hygiene services, health, protection and the situation of 1,350 people in 24 shelters, both official and makeshift, remain priority needs.

The post-flood dengue epidemic, compounded by a major heat wave, has reached a record 161,471 cases and 287 deaths - the highest dengue fever death rate per capita in the Americas. The Ministry of Health (MINSA) reports that the epidemiological curve has decreased for the fifth consecutive week, even in the most affected regions along the northern coast.

The implementation of emergency response projects backed by a UN Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) allocation of US$6.9 million is progressing according to plan. To date, about 15 per cent of the funds have been implemented and almost 50 per cent of additional funds have been committed.

HAITI: HUMANITARIAN SITUATION

KEY FIGURES

45K HOUSEHOLDS AFFECTED BY FLOODS ACROSS HAITI

Following the recent flooding that affected almost 45,000 households and a magnitude 5.5 earthquake in the Grand’Anse region in the beginning of June, the humanitarian community mobilised under the leadership of the Directorate General of Civil Protection (DGPC) to provide a multi-sectoral response in the worst-affected communes, in particular Léogâne, Cité Soleil, Port-au-Prince (Ouest) and the commune of Jérémie (Grand'Anse), amid access constraints due to the flooding (damaged and flooded roads) and insecurity.

These shocks come with Haiti in urgent need of funding to ensure that stocks, mobilised in response to the floods at the beginning of June, are replenished and that additional stocks are made available. In total, almost 7,400 households in vulnerable situations received non-food items (NFIs), hygiene kits and food kits, and over 14,000 people received hot meals for 15 days.

To date, just 24 per cent of the $720 million required for the 2023 Humanitarian Response Plan for Haiti has been funded.

REGIONAL: HUMANITARIAN FINANCING

KEY FIGURES

$13M IN CERF ALLOCATIONS FOR UNDERFUNDED EMERGENCIES IN LATIN AMERICA

CERF is allocating $6.5 million to Colombia and Honduras apiece through the Underfunded Emergencies window to support ongoing response. In Colombia, these funds will go towards Pacific region communities affected by conflict to support 17,000 people. This population includes ethnic communities, women, children, adolescents and people with disabilities. Participating organizations include UNICEF, WHO, UNHCR, FAO, WFP, UNFPA, UN Women and UNOPS.

Honduras’ allocation seeks to respond to 174,000 people in vulnerable conditions related to migration, violence, malnutrition, climate change and gender-based violence, with IOM, UNHCR, UNICEF, WHO and UNFPA undertaking response projects to address these needs.
