6.9 Earthquake Magnitude Hits South West Peru

On January 14, 2018 at 4:18AM local time, an earthquake 6.9 magnitude hit south west Peru. The epicenter was located 56 km from the coast of Arequipa.

Moderate damage and power outage has been reported in some areas of the Departments of Arequipa, Ayacucho and Ica.

The MoH has established contact with the main health facilities and they are operational. Two deaths and 86 injured were reported injured, two of them would have required medevac. The Ministry of Health is coordinating the response in most of the affected areas in close contact with the National Civil Defense and the Military. Two small health centers are out of function and local and subnational medical teams have been activated to support health services in the affected areas if needed.

The overall response is under control by national institutions and no international support has been requested.

PAHO/WHO Country Office has offered support to the MInistry of Health and is closely monitoring the situation in permanent contact with the health and national EOCs.
