Paraguay – Heavy Rains (DG ECHO, Media) (ECHO Daily Flash of 29 November 2016)

In the afternoon of 27 November, heavy rain affected several municipalities of Central Department, including the Capital municipality of Asunción. The Government of Central Department has declared the State of Emergency.

The intensity of the rain was unexpected (120 mm in two hours). At least one person has died in Villa Elisa municipality. Public infrastructure (schools, electricity supply, sewage and roads) were severely affected.

In Asunción municipality, at least 300 families located in Bañados (the most vulnerable areas near the river) lost their houses and need to be relocated in temporary shelters. Most of them returned to their homes only in July 2016 or later, after having been evacuated by the over-flooding of the Paraguay River in December 2015.
