1. AFTER HEAVY RAINS IN NOVEMBER AND DECEMBER 1994, IN JANUARY 1995 THE PARAGUAY RIVER REACHED ITS HIGHEST LEVEL IN THE LAST TEN YEARS. SEASONAL FLOODS USUALLY OCCUR AT END OF APRIL. LEVEL OF PARANA RIVER WAS ALSO UNUSUALLY HIGH.

2. 3,000 FAMILIES WERE EVACUATED FROM ASUNCION REGION. IN THE NORTH 300 FAMILIES ABANDONED THEIR HOMES AND 800 FISHERMEN FAMILIES REMAINED JOBLESS. IN THE SOUTH 120 FAMILIES WERE EVACUATED FROM CIUDAD DEL ESTE, 600 FROM ENCARNACION, 200 IN THE AYOLAS ZONE AND 300 IN THE SOUTHERN PART OF =A5EEMBUCU DEPARTMENT. COTTON CROPS AFFECTED BY ESTIMATED 20/30 PERCENT.

3. BY SECOND HALF OF APRIL ASUNCION HARBOUR WATER LEVEL MIGHT REACH 8 METRES POTENTIALLY REQUIRING EVACUATION OF 10,000 FAMILIES IN AFFECTED REGIONS.

4. LARGE PORTIONS OF AGRICULTURAL AND RURAL SETTLEMENTS ARE AT RISK OF BEING FLOODED.

5. NATIONAL EMERGENCY COMMITTEE COPING WITH ACTUAL SITUATION AND TAKING PREPAREDNESS MEASURES. FURTHER DETERIORATION OF SITUATION MIGHT HOWEVER REQUIRE ADDITIONAL ASSISTANCE.

6. UNDP/DHA RESIDENT REPRESENTATIVE LIAISING WITH AUTHORITIES AND KEEPING US INFORMED OF DEVELOPMENTS.
