Since 17 February, parts of Paraguay have been confronted with heavy rains resulting in severe floods in the departments of Alto Paraguay, Concepción and Amambay, prompting the Government to declare a State of Emergency in the affected areas.
The flash floods occur in the areas previously suffering a long spell of droughts, thus compromising abilities of the communities to withstand additional climatic shocks. Around 7,800 families (approximately 39,000 people, mainly indigenous and very vulnerable people) are directly affected, and suffer from destruction of houses and livelihoods. The affected families are also in urgent need of food, water, non-food items (clothes, hygiene/cleaning products, kitchen utensils), as well as medical attention. An outbreak of mosquito borne diseases of dengue and chikungunya is of concern, with nearly 15,000 new cases reported on a weekly basis by the Ministry of Public Health and Social Wellbeing.
The weather forecasts suggest that the affected areas are set to receive more rainfall/storms in the days to come, causing further flooding.
