PAPUA NEW GUINEA - TROPICAL CYCLONE ADEL
DHA-GENEVA INFORMATION REPORT NO. 1
17 MAY 1993

1. TROPICAL CYCLONE 'ADEL' HIT PAPUA NEW GUINEA ON 14 MAY 1993 WITH HIGH WINDS AND HEAVY RAINS. CYCLONE HAS AFFECTED WOODLARK, TROBRIAND, KITAVA, FERGUSSON, GOODENOUGH AND OTHER OUTLYING ISLANDS OF MILNE BAY PROVINCE AND ALSO SOUTHEASTERN PART OF MAINLAND.

2. INITIAL REPORTS INDICATE 1 DEATH IN TROBRIAND ISLANDS AND 9 MISSING. FROM BOAT SUNK OFF KITAVA ISLAND. ON TROBRIAND ISLAND 200 HOUSES, SCHOOL ACCOMMODATION AND WATER TANK DESTROYED. FOOD GARDENS AND COCONUT TREES ALSO DAMAGED. ON GAWA ISLAND 28 HOUSES AND SCHOOL CLASSROOM DESTROYED. ON KITAVA ISLAND 22 HOUSES, 2 CLASSROOMS AND OTHER BUILDINGS DAMAGED. ON VAKUTA ISLAND 6 HOUSES DESTROYED. ON FERGUSSON ISLAND 4 HOUSES DESTROYED AND COCONUT TREES DAMAGED.

3. NATIONAL DISASTER AND EMERGENCY SERVICES (NDES), WHICH IS THE FOCAL POINT IN THE GOVERNMENT, ORGANISING AERIAL SURVEILLANCE OF EFFECTED AREAS AND COORDINATING NATIONAL RELIEF EFFORTS.

4. AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT PROVIDED AN AIRLIFT OF TENTS AND TARPAULINS TO TROBILAND ISLANDS AND ASSISTING IN EMERGENCY COMMUNICATIONS BETWEEN TROBILAND ISLANDS AND PORT MORESBY.

5. TO DATE, THE GOVERNMENT HAS NOT APPEALED FOR INTERNATIONAL ASSISTANCE OTHER THAN ALREADY PROVIDED. HOWEVER UN RESIDENT REPRESENTATIVE IN CLOSE CONTACT WITH THE GOVERNMENT ON FURTHER DEVELOPMENTS.

1. LATEST REPORTS INDICATE 3 DEATHS FROM BOAT SUNK OFF KITAVA ISLAND, OTHERS WERE RESCUED. SMALL ISLAND OF IWA SUFFERED CONSIDERABLE DAMAGE TO HOUSES AND FOOD GARDENS. 400 HOUSES IN BOLUBOLU DISTRICT ON GOODENOUGH ISLAND DAMAGED. HOUSES AND FOOD GARDENS IN RABARABA DISTRICT IN MAINLAND ALSO DAMAGED BY WINDS AND FLOODING.

2. NATIONAL DISASTER AND EMERGENCY SERVICES (NDES) CONDUCTED AERIAL SURVEYS OF THE AFFECTED AREA. DUE TO THE DAMAGE TO FOOD GARDENS THERE ARE FEARS OF POSSIBLE FOOD SHORTAGES IN THE FUTURE.

3. THE GOVERNMENT IS PROVIDING NECESSARY RELIEF ASSISTANCE . THE SITUATION IS UNDER CONTROL. NO INTERNATIONAL ASSISTANCE IS REQUIRED.
