On the night of 5th December 2024, heavy rainfall occurred from around 9:00 PM until midnight of 6th December 2024.This relentless downpour triggered flooding of River Naru across the six villages of Det Ward 1 of Poroma Rural Local Level Government (LLG) in Nipa Kutubu District, Southern Highlands Province.

The flooding has caused significant damage to the livelihoods of the affected population, destroying food gardens and contaminating local water sources. Local residents expressed that they have never encountered a disaster of such magnitude in their lifetime, marking it as an unprecedented event for the community.

The most affected villages include Arep, Det, Awaranda, Naru, Yoru and Arepotem, all situated along the Riverbanks. On 11th of December 2024, IOM in coordination with the Nipa Kutubu Community Development Office conducted a Displacement Tracking Matrix Rapid Assessment of the affected villages.
