Violent Incidents in Lagaip/Porgera District, Enga Province
Local sources in Enga report that around 5pm of 22 October 2024, a 25 seater bus traveling from Wabag to Laiagam was ambushed in the Highlands Highway near Sirunki and shot at with automatic weapons. Preliminary information, still to be verified, indicates that the attack might be an attempt at retaliation for a recent murder in the area, on 18 October 2024, which had resulted in two fatalities. The attack resulted in at least six male passengers killed and a still to be determined number of injured. Enga Police and Papua New Guinea Defence Force personnel have reportedly been deployed to the area of the attack. Further retaliatory attacks between the involved communities may still occur. The above incident follows an unrelated firefight on 11 October 2024 the PNGDF, the security escort of a fleet of new vehicles being delivered to New Porgera Limited (NPL) and a group of local community members who expressed opposition to the movement of the convoy through the bypass road created over the Mulitaka landslide. Sources claim at least two dead on the local residents’ side and at least one severely injured on the convoy’s security detail side. NPL assets have also allegedly been destroyed during and after the altercation. This prompted the Enga Provincial Administration to issue a memorandum restricting non-essential travel to the landslide site. The UN Resident Coordinator also directed that there be no UN personnel movement or implementing partner missions on UN’s behalf into the area west of Wabag, until further notice.
