Severe Flooding in Det 1 Ward, Poroma LLG, Nipa-Kutubu District, Southern Highlands Province

Locals in Det ward council, Poroma LLG, Nipa-Kutubu District, Southern Highlands Province, have been affected by severe flooding due to recent continuous rainfall. After a particularly heavy downpour beginning on Thursday 5 December, the Naru river which runs through the council ward burst its banks causing profound destruction of property, food gardens, and livestock, as well as, polluting underground water sources.

IOM conducted a Displacement Tracking Matrix assessment on 11 December and found that a total of 739 individuals from 126 households in the villages of Arep, Det, Awaranda, Naru, Yoru and Arepotem have been affected, with no reported displacements. IOM also delivered emergency non-food items to these households. The remaining need is for agricultural inputs to restore destroyed food gardens.
