PAPUA NEW GUINEA - FLOODS/VOLCANIC ACTIVITY

FLOODS IN SEPIK REGION OF PAPUA NEW GUINEA

1. EXTENSIVE FLOODING CAUSED BY HEAVY RAINS REPORTED IN LOW LYING AREA AROUND SEPIK RIVER IN NORTHERN PARTS OF PAPUA NEW GUINEA. FIRM DATA ON EXTENT OF DAMAGE IS NOT YET AVAILABLE.

2. UNDP/UNDRO RESIDENT REPRESENTATIVE IN CONTACT WITH OFFICE FOR INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT ASSISTANCE WHICH IS OVERALL CO-ORDINATING BODY FOR PROVISION OF AID WITH NATIONAL DISASTER AND EMERGENCY SERVICE RESPONSIBLE FOR IMPLEMENTATION. SO FAR, NO REQUEST FOR INTERNATIONAL ASSISTANCE HAS BEEN MADE BY GOVERNMENT.

VOLCANIC ACTIVITY

3. A VOLCANO ON MANAM ISLAND, MADANG PROVINCE, ACTIVE SINCE END OF MARCH INCREASED ITS ACTIVITY TO MODERATE/STRONG LEVELS.

4. PRELIMINARY INFORMATION INDICATES SOUTH AND MAIN CRATERS ACTIVE AND PRODUCING LAVA FLOW INTO ISLAND'S SOUTH-EAST AND SOUTH-WEST VALLEYS. AT PRESENT, NO DANGER TO 6,000 INHABITANTS REPORTED AND NO EVACUATION ANTICIPATED WITH CURRENT LEVEL OF ACTIVITY. HOWEVER, THIS COULD BECOME NECESSARY IF LAVA FLOW OR FRAGMETARY MATERIAL EXTENDS INTO OTHER AREAS.

5. SO FAR, NO REQUEST FOR INTERNATIONAL ASSISTANCE HAS BEEN MADE BY THE GOVERNMENT.
