Papua New Guinea: Communal Violence in Kumbal, Jiwaka, Chimbu Provincial Border - Situation Report #1 (26 August 2025)

Attachments

The conflict in Kumbal began in July 2025 when a supporter from Komunka Community attempted to destroy a solar light, sparking clashes with Dambe and Kombkane youths. On 4 August, following the supporter’s death, the Komenka Tribe launched a retaliatory attack on Kumbal, burning three houses, damaging trade stores, and killing a tribal leader, bringing total deaths to two. Tensions escalated further on 22 August, when Komunka members (South Waghi, Jiwaka Province) reportedly launched fresh attacks against the Dambe and Komb-Dalwa Tribes (North Waghi, Jiwaka Province). In response, the Provincial Police Commanders (PPCs) of Jiwaka and Simbu deployed additional security forces and are now facilitating peace efforts. A reconciliation meeting is planned in Minj, where 10 leaders from each tribe will be invited to initiate dialogue and explore options for a peaceful resolution. Despite these measures, the situation remains tense, with armed groups mobilizing and a persistent risk of renewed violence.
