Wildpoliovirus type 1 (WPV1)

Cases: No new WPV1 positive cases reported this week. In total, 52 WPV1-positive cases have been confirmed in 2025 to date (21 from Afghanistan and 31 from Pakistan in 2025) and 2 WPV1 cases reported in 2026 (1 each from Afghanistan and Pakistan).

Environment: Eleven new WPV1 positive environmental samples were reported this week – Four from Afghanistan in 2025 and seven from Pakistan in 2026. The new WPV1 positive samples reported from Afghanistan are from: 3 from Hilmand province (2 from Lashkargah and 1 from Nahr-E-Saraj districts) and 1 from Zabul province (Qalat district) with collection date for all on 23rd December 2025, while the reported new WPV1 positive samples from Pakistan are all from Sindh province (one each from Kashmore, Badin, Mirpurkhas, Hyderabad, Kambar districts, Karachi South and Karachi East towns) with collection dates on 9 th and 10th March 2026. In total, 745 WPV1-positive environmental samples have been reported in 2025 (94 from Afghanistan and 651 from Pakistan) and 65 WPV1-positive environmental samples reported in 2026 (17 from Afghanistan and 48 from Pakistan).

Vaccine-derived poliovirus (VDPV)

Cases:

• cVDPV2: One new cVDPV2 positive case in 2026 from Somalia reported this week. The new cVDPV2 case is from Lower Juba province (Kismayo district) with onset date on 20th February 2026. The cVDPV2 case count to date in 2026 is 3 (all from Somalia) and in 2025 is 40 (30 from Yemen, 7 from Sudan, 2 from Somalia and 1 from Djibouti)

Environment

• cVDPV1: No new cVDPV1 isolates were reported this week. cVDPV1 were confirmed from 10 environmental samples in 2025 (all from Djibouti).

• cVDPV2: Five new cVDPV2 positive environmental surveillance samples in 2025 from Sudan were reported this week. The new cVDPV2 positive environmental surveillance samples are: 3 from Red Sea province (2 from Port Sudan and 1 from Seinkat districts) and 1 each from East Darfur province (Eldean district) and West Darfur province (El Geneana district) with collection dates between 16th July to 30th December 2025. To date, cVDPV2 was confirmed in 56 sewage water samples in 2025 (17 from Djibouti, 13 each from Somalia and Yemen, 7 from occupied Palestinian territory, and 6 from Sudan) and 4 in 2026 (from Somalia).

• Advance notification: 2 cVDPV2 and 1 VDPV2 positive environmental samples from Sudan in 2026 were advance notified this week. Details will be shared in next bulletin.
