Wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1)

Cases: No new WPV-1 positive cases reported this week. In total, 44 WPV1-positive cases have been confirmed in 2025 to date (13 from Afghanistan and 31 from Pakistan in 2025).

Environment: Eight new WPV1 positive environmental samples in 2026 from Pakistan were reported this week. The new WPV1 positive environmental samples reported are from: 5 from Sindh province (2 from Karachi South town, 1 each from Karachi Central town, Jamshoro, Shahid Benazirabad districts) and 3 from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province (2 from Bannu and 1 from WazirestanNorth districts) with collection dates between 6 th – 14th January 2026. In total, 724 WPV1-positive environmental samples have been reported in 2025 (73 from Afghanistan and 651 from Pakistan) and 20 WPV1-positive environmental samples reported in 2026 (all from Pakistan).

Vaccine-derived poliovirus (VDPV)

Cases:

• cVDPV2: One new cVDPV2 positive case in 2026 from Somalia reported this week. The cVDPV2 case is from Lower Juba province (Kismayo district) with date of onset 3 rd January 2026. The cVDPV2 case count to date in 2026 is 1 (from Somalia) and in 2025 is 40 (30 from Yemen, 7 from Sudan, 2 from Somalia and 1 from Djibouti)

Environment

• cVDPV1: No new cVDPV1 isolates were reported this week. cVDPV1 were confirmed from 10 environmental samples in 2025 (all from Djibouti).

• cVDPV2: Two new cVDPV2 positive environmental samples one in 2025 and another in 2026 from Somalia were reported this week. The new positive environmental samples are both from Lower Juba province (Kismayo district) with collection dates 21st December 2025 and 5 th January 2026. To date, cVDPV2 was confirmed in 51 sewage water samples in 2025 (17 from Djibouti, 13 each from Somalia and Yemen, 7 from occupied Palestinian territory, and 1 from Sudan) and 1 in 2026 (from Somalia).
