Highlights of the week
WildPoliovirus
▪ No new WPV1 cases reported this week. The total WPV1 cases count for 2025 to date is 7 (1 from Afghanistan and 6 from Pakistan) and in 2024, the total case count remains 99 (25 from Afghanistan and 74 from Pakistan).
▪ Thirty-three new WPV1 ES reported this week in 2025 – Eight from Afghanistan and twenty-five from Pakistan. The newly reported WPV1 ES from Afghanistan are as follows: 3 from Hilmand province (2 from Lashkargah and 1 from Nahr-E-Saraj districts), 2 from Kandahar province (both from Kandahar district), and 1 each from Kabul province (Kabul district), Nangarhar province (Jalalabad district), and Zabul province (Qalat district) with collection date for all on 23rd February 2025. While the newly reported WPV1 ES from Pakistan are as follows: 9 from Balochistan province (Pishin, Loralai, Usta Muhammad, Khuzdar, Lasbela, Nsirabad, Dukki, Quetta, and Kech districts), 8 from Punjab province (3 from Lahore and 1 each from Bahwlnagar, Bahawalpur, Dera Ghazi Khan, Rahimyar Khan, and Multan districts), and 8 from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province (2 each from Peshawar, Bannu and Wazir-South Lower, and 1 each from Lakki Marwat, and Kohat districts), the collection dates vary between 5 th to 19th March 2025. The total ES count to date in 2025 is 227 (17 from Afghanistan and 210 from Pakistan) compared to 741 in 2024 (113 from Afghanistan and 628 from Pakistan).
Vaccine derived poliovirus (VDPV)
▪ No new cVDPV2 cases reported this week. The cVDPV2 cases count in 2025 to date is 1 (from Djibouti) compared to 45 in 2024 (37 from Yemen, 7 from Somalia, and 1 from Occupied Palestinian Territory).
▪ Eight new cVDPV2 ES reported this week in 2025 – Seven from Djibouti and one from Occupied Palestinian Territory. The reported cVDPV2 ES in Djibouti are as follows: 3 from Arta district and 4 from Djibouti district of Djibouti province with collection dates vary between 19th January to 2 nd March 2025, while the reported cVDPV2 ES from Occupied Palestinian Territory is from Khan Younis district of Gaza Strip province with collection date on 5 th March 2025. The count of cVDPV2 from ES in 2025 to date is 18 (10 from Djibouti, 7 from Occupied Palestinian Territory and 1 from Somalia) as compared to 49 in 2024 (20 from Occupied Palestinian Territory, 12 from Yemen, 9 from Djibouti, 3 from Somalia, 2 each from Egypt and Sudan, and 1 in Bahrain).
▪ One VDPV1 ES was reported this week from Gaza City district of Gaza Strip province in Occupied Palestinian Territory with sample collection date on 5 th March 2025.
