Highlights of the week
Wild Poliovirus
▪ Three new WPV1 cases reported this week – One from Afghanistan in 2025 and two from Pakistan (one in 2024 and the other in 2025). The newly WPV1 case reported from Afghanistan is from Bala Murhab district of Badghis province with date of onset on 27th January 2025, while the reported cases from Pakistan are both from Sindh province (Shikarpur and Badin districts) with dates of onset on 15th December 2024 and 30th January 2025 respectively. Index case of Shikarpur district was identified by a positive contact. The total WPV1 cases count for 2025 to date is 3 (1 from Afghanistan and 2 from Pakistan). In 2024, the total case count is 99 (25 from Afghanistan and 74 from Pakistan).
▪ Eighteen new WPV1 positive ES reported this week; Nine each from Afghanistan and Pakistan in 2025. The newly reported WPV1 ES are: For Afghanistan, 5 from Kandahar province (all from Kandahar district), 3 from Hilmand province (2 from Nahr-E-Saraj and 1 from Lashkargah districts), and 1 from Laghman province (Mehtarlam district), with collection dates between 25th – 26th January 2025. While newly reported WPV1 ES from Pakistan are as follows: 5 from Balochistan province (Kech, Barkhan, Sibi, Quetta, Gwadur districts), and 4 from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province (2 Wazir-South Lower, Bannu, Dera Ismail Khan districts), with samples collection dates between 15th to 24th January 2025. The total ES count to date in 2025 is 80 (9 from Afghanistan and 71 from Pakistan) compared to 741 in 2024 (113 from Afghanistan and 628 from Pakistan).
Vaccine derived poliovirus (VDPV)
▪ No new cVDPV cases reported this week. The cVDPV2 cases count in 2024 to date remains 39.
▪ Three new cVDPV2 ES from Occupied Palestinian Territory reported this week. The newly reported cVDPV2 ES are from Gaza Strip, 2 from Deir Al-Balah and 1 from Khan Younis districts, with samples collection date on 9th January 2025. One ES site in Deir Al-Balah isolates included a mixture of cVDPV2+VDPV2. The count of cVDPV2 from ES in 2025 is 3 (3 from Occupied Palestinian Territory) compared to 38 in 2024 (20 from Occupied Palestinian Territory, 7 from Yemen, 3 each from Djibouti and Somalia, 2 each from Egypt and Sudan, and 1 in Bahrain).
