Highlights of the week
Wild Poliovirus
▪ No new WPV1 cases reported this week. The total WPV1 cases count for 2025 to date is 1 from Pakistan. In 2024, the total case count remains 98 (25 from Afghanistan and 73 from Pakistan).
▪ Twenty-Three new WPV1 positive ES reported this week, all from Pakistan in 2025. The newly reported WPV1 ES are: 8 each from Balochistan province (Zhob, Noshki, Lasbela, Hub, Khuzdar, Nasirabad, Dera Bugti, and Usta Muhammad districts) and Punjab province (3 from Lahore, and 1 each from Multan, Bahawalpur, Jhang, Rahim Yar Khan, and Dera Ghazi Khan districts), 4 from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province (Charsada, Tank, Peshawar, and Swabi districts), and 1 each from Sindh province (Karachi East Town), Azad Jammu Kashmir province (Muzaffarabad district), and Islamabad province (Capital Development Authority district) with sample collection dates between 8th to 23rd January 2025. The total ES count to date in 2025 is 62 (all from Pakistan) compared to 741 in 2024 (113 from Afghanistan and 628 from Pakistan).
Vaccine derived poliovirus (VDPV)
▪ No new cVDPV isolates reported this week. The cVDPV2 cases count in 2024 to date remains 39, while the count of cVDPV2 from ES in 2024 to date is 38.
▪ One new VDPV3 was reported from the Occupied Palestinian Territory in 2024, from Tubas site in Nabulus district within the West Bank province, with collection date 2nd December 2024 noting that sequencing results are awaited
